Greg Foat and I had been mutual fans for years, and in early 2024 we finally had the opportunity to collaborate together. We went to a beautiful ski village in the Alps and over four days we recorded Moving Images in its entirety, most of which was written on the spot. The album clearly reflects both Greg and my musical sensibilities while sitting firmly in the sweet spot of where we overlap. The result is a very special album- sonically kaleidoscopic and yet focused, diverse in its moods while keeping a consistent vibe. Truly a career highlight and point of pride for all of us.
– Frank Maston
Moving Images is the first release on Magic Hollow, bringing together composers Frank Maston and Greg Foat for a contemporary reimagining of classic European library music – concise, melodic compositions built from vintage keyboards, analogue synthesis and drum machines, realised with clarity and restraint.
Recorded in February 2025 at Ritmo Studios in Leysin, Switzerland, high in the Alps, Moving Images unfolds as a suite of finely balanced cues defined by texture, atmosphere and tonal precision. Swiss bassist, Elie Ghersinu, features throughout, his fluid, melodic bass providing a constant anchor across the record’s shifting moods.
Drawing on the golden era of European library music from De Wolfe and Bruton releases to works by Alan Hawkshaw, Karl Jenkins, Mike Ratledge and Alessandro Alessandroni, the album channels the discipline and elegance of the form without slipping into pastiche. Rather than imitation, Maston and Foat internalise the grammar of vintage library composition and translate it into a contemporary language: warm analogue tones, economical arrangements, and strong melodic identities.
The result is music that feels both archival and forward-looking, functional yet expressive, cinematic yet intimate.

He spent his teenage years experimenting with writing and recording, and in 2011, he released a series of cassette albums as Maston and began playing live in the LA music scene. His first full-length LP, “Shadows”, was released in 2013 to positive reviews, with Pitchfork hailing him as a “bedroom-pop genius”.
Maston’s brilliance lies in his ability to create a cinematicuniverse through music alone

Greg Foat
London-based keyboardist, composer, bandleader, and DJ Greg Foat is a musician completely of his time and somehow beyond it. His highly original “non-contemporary jazz” utilizes both conventional instruments and an exotic array of unorthodox ones, including harpsichord, tubular bells, and a 15-piece choir. Foat’s music relies heavily on inspirations from library and soundtrack music, global folk traditions, psychedelia, hymnody, ambient music, and ’60s and ’70s pop, soul, and blues
Greg Foat takes jazz to places where genres cease to matter and the music soars for the sake of it.
