Krzysztof Meyer was born on 11th August, 1943 in Cracow. From the age of five he learned the piano, and from 1954 - theory and composition with Stanislaw Wiechowicz. After graduating from the Fryderyk Chopin State Secondary School of Music in Cracow he began to study at the College of Music in Cracow where he obtained two diplomas with distinction: in 1965 in composition - under Krzysztof Penderecki (after Stanislaw Wiechowicz's death) and in 1966 in theory - under Aleksander Fraczkiewicz. In 1964, 1966, and 1968 he went to France to study for some months with Nadia Boulanger. In 1965-67 he appeared as a pianist with the contemporary music group "MW 2 Ensemble", giving concerts both at home and abroad - in most European countries. He also played his solo compositions for piano.
From 1966 to 1987 Krzysztof Meyer taught theoretical subjects at the State College of Music (now Academy of Music) in Cracow. In the years 1972-75 he was the head of the Department of Music Theory. From 1987 he .teaches composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. He also lectured on contemporary music abroad (Soviet Union, East and West Germany, Austria, Brazil). In the years 1985-1989 he was the President of the Union of Polish Composers.
Krzysztof Meyer is a prize-winner of numerous awards, such as the First Prize at the competition for young composers in France (1966), Second Prize at the Young Polish Composer's Competition for Symphony No.1 (1966), the Aaron Copland Scholarship (1966), Honourable Mention for Symphony No. 2 (1967) and the First Prize for Symphony No. 3 (1968), Grand Prix at the Prince Pierre de Monaco International Composer's Competition for his opera "Cyberiada" (1970), twice Special Mention at Tribune Internationale des Compositeurs UNESCO in Paris for String Quartet No. 2 and String Quartet No. 3 (1970, 1976 respectively), the Second Prize at the Artur Malawski Composers' Competition in Cracow for Concerto da camera per oboe, percussion ed archi (1972), twice the Award of the Minister of Culture and Art (1973, 1975), the First Prize at the Karol Szymanowski Competition in Warsaw for Symphony No. 4 (1974), twice the Medal granted by the Government of Brazil for String Quartet No. 4 and Concerto retro (1975, 1977 respectively), the Gottfried-von-Herder-Preis (1984), and the annual Award of the Union of Polish Composers (1992). He is a member of the Freie Akademie der Künste in Mannheim.
Krzysztof Meyer's compositions have been performed in Europe and in America. They have been played at international festivals of contemporary music, such as "Warsaw Autumn", "Musicki Biennale Zagreb", "Holland Festival", "Musikprotokoll-Graz", "Aldeburgh Festival" and others. Some of his works were comissioned by or composed for the most eminent soloists (the Flute Concerto - for Aurele Nicolet, the Concerto da camera per oboe - for Lothar Faber, the Pezzo capriccioso - for Heinz Holliger, the Trumpet Concerto - for Timofiei Dokshitzer, the Violoncello Concerto - for Mstislav Rostropovich, the Violoncello Sonata for David Geringas, the Canti Amadei - for Ivan Monighetti). His Symphony No. 1 was one of the three obligatory contemporary compositions at the International Course for Conductors in Monaco directed by Igor Markevich in 1971.
Krzysztof Meyer is the author of the first Polish monograph on the life and work of Dmitri Shostakovich (PWM 1973, 1986 and the German version - Leipzig 1980). He has also written a number of articles, mainly on contemporary music, printed in "Melos", "Muzyka", "Ruch Muzyczny", "Das Orchester", "Sovetskaya Muzyka" and other periodicals.
The Wilanow Quartet is named after the old summer residence of the Polish Royal Family - Warsaw's equivalent to Potsdam, Versailles or Sandringham. Founded in 1967, it was originally called the "Beethoven Quartet"; there followed a regular series of concerts in the Wilanow Palace, and so the quartet changed its name two years later. The ensemble has been awarded a number of prestigious prizes: 1971, second prize in the Vienna International Competition; 1972, the silver medal at the Bordeaux Bienniel Festival; 1973, 3rd prize in the German Radio Association (ARD) Competition in Music. Tours through Europe followed as well as to the USA and South America. The quartet has appeared at festivals in Warsaw, Graz and Berlin, and recorded works by Penderecki and Ravel for the BBC. In Poland the quartet is regarded as a leading inspiration in the renaissance of string quartet playing, a model for many newer and younger groups.
"I composed the Ninth String Quartet from the end of 1989 until early in 1990 and continued my working relationship with the Wilanow Quartet, for whom I had composed my earlier quartets.
In each quartet I addressed a specific approach of musical composition. For example, the Second Quartet is serially organized with two tone-rows, the Fourth contains various collage techniques. The Fifth Quartet is actually a cello concerto, in which the solo part is accompanied by three string instruments; the Seventh is made up of constantly changing constellations formed by duets and trios...
In the Ninth Quartet it is the varied types of unisono that form the point of departure. The unisono sound of the string quartet has a singular character. Unisono playing demands an absolutely pure intonation from the players because the listener will be highly irritated by the slightest deviation. In this quartet, unisono playing is present in virtually all the movements, occurring in the most varied forms determined by tempo, dynamics, and register. The main themes are presented in unisono, whereas contrapuntal writing is used for accompaniment and contrast.
In the first movement, a motoric Allegro, the unisono elements are realized in their simplest forms. Rapid movement dominates, maintaining a balance between the register extremes. Asymetrical, irregular pulsating creates an extended tension that is first resolved at the end of the movement.
In the extended second movement (Calmo), an extremely compact Adagio, doublings to the fourth octave replace the unison. In the constantly extended or diminished sound envelope the musical ideas develop slowly, capitalizing upon the varied nuances in colour and dynamics, barely going beyond piano. The individual parts are permeated with harmonics, sul ponticello, or sul tasto. The movement ends enigmatically: Strong interjections of pizzicati at the unison interrupt the flow, forming an elision to the following movement.
In the third movement, pizzicato is presented in varied forms and dynamics, with the unisono elements interpolated both horizontally and vertically. In the vertical, the main unisono melody is gradually clothed in half- and whole-tone elements, while, in the horizontal, a strict, four-voice canon is developed. The movement culminates in the middle, exactly at that singular point where all players play arco.
The fourth movement is a short interlude, a preparation leading to the Finale. Long notes replace the unisono, and in the background a constantly recurring motive occurs in the violins.
The Finale (Vivo) relates in its character in part to the first movement, but with more complex musical material. Elements already introduced in the earlier movements return in constantly contrasting relationships.
The Ninth String Quartet is dedicated to the gifted Polish painter Jerzy Stajuda who was also an expert on music, and who died in 1992. During our long friendship we spent an infinite amount of time conversing with each other, with music as the Leitmotiv. During one evening Jerzy Stajuda remarked to me that he especially liked Beethoven and Schonberg. For this reason there are two references to the chamber music of these two composers. I leave it to the astute listener, well-versed in their music, to find out just where these references occur. It actually should not be too difficult!
My work with the Wilanow Quartet goes back to the year 1969, and is not restricted to string quartet writing. Members of the quartet took part in the premieres of other chamber music works of mine, such as the Piano Trio, the Flute Quartet, and the Clarinet Quintet. At one time I decided to compose a work so that we could all play together, and this led to the Piano Quintet, which I composed in 1990/91.
As with the Piano Trio and the Clarinet Quintet, the Piano Quintet is an extended work of over half an hour. The Piano Quintet contains monumental elements characteristic of this instrumental combination, but contains other harmonic essentials. Symmetrical chords form an integral part of the characteristic musical ideas.
The work comprises four contrasting movements, although there is no direct connection to the traditional cyclic form of classical chamber music. The first and third movements disintegrate into two episodes (slow-fast); the second and fourth movements are in ABA form.
In the slow episode of the first movement the piano part is placed against the strings: The motives of the piano are short and marked, as opposed to the generally long, calm string parts that are connected by glissandi. The second movement (Misterioso) is very slow. At the beginning, the parts of the piano and the four strings alternate, only to gradually amalgamate later. In the middle episode the dynamics increase and the musical events culminate dramatically. The second movement leads attacca into the following movement, which is a short, highly-motivic, uneasy Scherzo. Here a continuously increasing tension and movement is characteristic. At the end of this movement the musical events abruptly end, and scattered pizzicati and staccati in the piano part interrupt the expected course of musical events. The extensive Finale begins with a kind of Trauermarsch, upon which the main theme follows in a fast tempo. In the Epilog elements of the Trauermarsch and all previous movements are vaguely referred to.
The Piano Quintet was commissioned by the Cologne Philharmonic, where it was premiered by the Wilanow Quartet and the composer on May 25, 1992."

Krzysztof Meyer wurde am 11. August 1943 in Krakau geboren. Seit seinem fünften Lebensjahr lernte er Klavierspielen und nahm dann ab 1954 Unterricht in Theorie und Komposition bei Stanislaw Wiechowicz. Nachdem er die Chopin-Musikschule in Krakau absolviert hatte, studierte er an der dortigen Musikhochschule, wo er zwei Studiengänge mit Auszeichnung abschloß: 1965 er- hielt er sein Diplom in Komposition bei Krzysztof Penderecki (nach Wiechowiczs Tod), und 1966 sein Diplom in Musiktheorie bei Aleksander Fraczkiewicz. In den Jahren 1964, 1966 und 1968 studierte er jeweils für einige Monate in Frankreich bei Nadia Boulanger.
Von 1965 bis 1967 trat er als Pianist im "Ensemble für zeitgenössische Musik MW2" auf und konzertierte in Polen sowie in den meisten Ländern des europäischen Auslands. Außerdem spielte er als Solist seine eigenen Kompositionen.
Von 1966 bis 1987 unterrichtete Krzysztof Meyer musiktheoretische Fächer an der Staatlichen Musikhochschule (derzeit Musikakademie) in Krakau und stand von 1972 bis 1975 als Dekan dem Institut für Musiktheorie und Komposition vor. Seit 1987 ist er Professor an der Musikhochschule in Köln, wo er eine Meisterklasse für Komposition leitet. Meyer hielt im In- und Ausland zahlreiche Vorlesungen über neue Musik (in der Sowjetunion, in Ost- und Westdeutschland, Österreich und Brasilien). Von 1985 bis 1989 war er Vorsitzender des Polnischen Komponistenverbandes.
Krzysztof Meyer wurden zahlreiche Kompositionspreise zuerkannt - der 1. Preis beim Wettbewerb junger Komponisten in Frankreich (1966), der 2. Preis beim Wettbewerb junger polnischer Komponisten (1966 für die 1. Sinfonie), das Aaron Copland Stipendium (1966), Auszeichnung (1967 für die 2. Sinfonie) und 1. Preis (1968 für die 3. Sinfonie) beim Fitelberg-Kompositionswettbewerb, Grand Prix Prince Pierre de Monaco (1970 für die Oper "Kyberiade"), eine zweimalige Sonderauszeichnung der Tribüne Internationale des Compositeurs UNESCO in Paris (1970 und 1976 für das zweite bzw. dritte Streichquartett), der 2. Preis beim Krakauer Artur-Malawski-Wettbewerb (1972 für Concerto da camera per oboe, percussione ed archi), zweimaliger Preis des Kultusministeriums (1973 und 1975), der 1. Preis beim Warschauer Karol-Szymanowski-Wettbewerb (1974 für die 4. Sinfonie), zweimalige Medaille der Brasilianischen Regierung (1975 und 1977 für das 4. Streichquartett bzw. für Concerto retro), Gottfried-von-Herder-Preis (1984). Meyer ist Mitglied der Freien Akademie der Künste in Mannheim.
Krzysztof Meyers Kompositionen wurden in Europa und in Amerika aufgeführt. Sie wurden bei bedeutenden internationalen Musikfestivals gespielt - beispielsweise beim "Warschauer Herbst", "Musicki Biennale Zagreb", "Holland Festival", "Musikprotokoll-Graz" und beim "Aldeburgh Festival". Manche Werke (darunter einige Auftragswerke) entstanden für bedeutende Interpreten: das Flötenkonzert für Aurele Nicolet, das Concerto da camera per oboe für Lothar Faber, das Pezzo capriccioso für Heinz Holliger, das Trompetenkonzert für Timofiei Dokshitzer, das Cellokonzert für Mstislav Rostropowitsch, die Cellosonate für David Geringas, Canti Amadei für Ivan Monighetti). Krzysztof Meyer schrieb die erste polnische Monographie zu Leben und Werk von Dmitri Schostakowitsch (Kraköw 1973,1986, in deutscher Übersetzung Leipzig 1980). Meyer verfaßte auch zahlreiche Artikel (insbesondere zur zeitgenössischen Musik) für Zeitschriften wie "Melos", "Muzyka". "Ruch Muzyczny", "Das Orchester", "Sovetskaja Muzyka" und andere.
Das Wilanöw-Quartett trägt seinen Namen nach der Sommerresidenz der polnischen Könige, sozusagen dem Warschauer Potsdam oder Versailles. Ursprünglich wurde es 1967 als "Beethoven-Quartett" gegründet und erhielt erst zwei Jahre später diesen Namen dank regelmäßiger Konzerte in dieser Sommerresidenz des Königs Jan Sobieski. 1971 erhielt es den 2. Preis beim Internationalen Streichquartett-Wettbewerb in Wien, 1972 die Silbermedaille der 5. Biennale in Bordeaux und 1973 den 3. Preis beim ARD-Wettbewerb in München. Konzertreisen folgen durch West- und Osteuropa, USA und Südamerika - das Quartett spielte beim Warschauer Herbst, beim Grazer Musikprotokoll und bei den Berliner Festwochen; für BBC London nahm es die Streichquartette von Penderecki und Ravel auf. In Polen gehört das Quartett zu den Schrittmachern der beispiellosen Streichquartett-Renaissance der letzten Jahrzehnte - es wurde Vorbild für viele neugegründete Quartette.
"Am 9. Streichquartett arbeitete ich Ende 1989/Anfang 1990. Mit diesem Werk setzte ich meine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Wilanöw-Quartett fort, für das ich auch die meisten meiner früheren Quartette komponierte.
In jedem Quartett stellte ich mir eine andere kompositorische Aufgabe. Beispielsweise beruht im 2. Quartett die Organisation des Klangmaterials auf zwei verschiedenen Zahlenreihen, und im 4. Quartett interessierte mich die Collage-Technik. Das 5. Quartett ist gleichsam ein Cellokonzert zur Begleitung dreier Streicher, und im 7. Quartett beschränkte sich die Faktur auf stets wechselnde Konstellationen von Duetten, Terzetten ...
Im 9. Streichquartett bildet das Unisono in unterschiedlicher Gestalt das Ausgangsmodell der Faktur. Der Unisono-Klang im Streichquartett hat einzigartigen Charakter. Unisono-Spiel verlangt vom Spieler eine absolute Reinheit der Intonation, da vom Hörer selbst die allerkleinste Abweichung sofort als grober Fehler wahrgenommen wird. Im 9. Quartett wirkt das Unisono in fast allen Sätzen, und zwar in unterschiedlicher Gestalt, je nach Tempo, Dynamik und Register. Im Unisono erscheinen die thematischen Hauptgedanken, während die kontrapunktierenden Stimmen mal ergänzend, mal kontrastierend wirken.
Der erste Satz, ein motorisches Agitato, realisiert den Unisono-Gedanken in seiner einfachsten Form. Hier herrscht unangefochten eine rasche Bewegung, die sich beharrlich um eine Balance zwischen höchstem und niedrigstem Klangregister bemüht. Das asymmetrische, irreguläre Pulsieren schafft fortwährende Spannung, die sich erst am Schluß dieses Satzes entlädt.
Im ausgedehnten zweiten Satz (Calmo), einem expressiv konzentrierten Adagio, tritt an die Stelle des Einklangs bisweilen eine Verdopplung in bis zu vier Oktaven. Im permanent erweiterten oder verengten Klangraum entwickelt sich die Musik nur langsam. Sie exponiert unterschiedliche Schattierungen in der Klangfarbe und in der Dynamik, die kaum über das piano hinausgelangt. Das Spiel der Instrumente wird durchsetzt von Flageoletts, vom Spiel sul ponticello oder sul tasto. Dieser Satz findet kein rechtes Ende. Heftige Interventionen (Unisono pizzicato) unterbrechen seinen Fluß, und mit ihnen nimmt der nächste Satz seinen Anfang, der sich mit dem zweiten überschneidet.
Im dritten Satz wird die Klangfarbe beherrscht von Pizzicato in verschiedener Gestalt und Dynamik. Das Unisono wird schon bald horizontal und vertikal aufgesplittert. In der Vertikalen werden der im Unisono verlaufenden Hauptlinie nach und nach Halb- und Ganztöne beigefügt, während sich in der horizontalen Ebene ein strenger vierstimmiger Kanon bildet. In der Mitte des Satzes wird der Kulminationspunkt erreicht, an dem die Musiker ein einziges Mal alle arco spielen.
Der vierte Satz ist ein kurzes Interludium zur Vorbereitung des Finales. Statt des Unisonos erscheinen lange Noten, auf deren Hintergrund die Violinen im höchsten Register hartnäckig ein und dasselbe Motiv imitieren.
Das Finale (Vivo) bezieht sich in seinem Charakter teilweise auf den ersten Satz zurück, jedoch ist im Finale das musikalische Material komplexer. An diesem Satz fällt vor allem das permanente Auftreten kontrastierender musikalischer Gedanken auf, die teilweise dem aus früheren Sätzen bekannten Material verwandt sind.
Das 9. Streichquartett ist dem hervorragenden polnischen Maler Jerzy Stajuda gewidmet. Der 1992 verstorbene Künstler war auch ein großer Musikkenner. Im Laufe unserer langjährigen Freundschaft verbrachten wir unzählige Stunden bei Gesprächen, durch die sich die Musik wie ein Leitmotiv zog. Einmal bekannte mir Jerzy Stajuda, daß er unter den Musikern Beethoven und Schönberg besonders schätze. Aus diesem Grund finden sich in meinem Werk zwei Anspielungen auf die Kammermusik dieser beiden Komponisten. Wo diese auftreten, werde ich nicht verraten - für jemanden, der das Schaffen beider Komponisten gut kennt und Musik zu hören versteht, werden sie leicht zu erkennen sein.
Meine auf das Jahr 1969 zurückgehende Zusammenarbeit mit dem Wilanow-Quartett beschränkte sich nicht auf die Gattung des Streichquartetts. Mitglieder des Wilanöw-Quartetts waren auch an der Uraufführung weiterer kammermusikalischer Werke beteiligt, u.a. bei meinem Klaviertrio, Flötenquartett und Klarinettenquintett. Diesmal lag mir daran, ein Werk zu komponieren, in dem wir gemeinsam musizieren konnten. So entstand der Gedanke an ein Klavierquintett, an dem ich 1990/91 arbeitete."
