Continuing adventures in Narrative Sound Design Good For: Sound Design, Trailers, Horror
  • VHMD000701 0:45
Cyberterror: epic, mean and hit-filled. Distorted, metallic high-frequency hits with buzzing low synthetic thrums at the top announce the arrival of something terrifying, quickly followed by a suspense-filled build. Alarm-like shrieks alternate with massive hits @:17 suggesting two worlds at odds. Good for monsters, dinosaurs, aliens or proctologist's hands - basically for anything that's bigger than you 'd like it to be.
  • VHMD000702 0:59
Constellations reveal their forms, animate and battle. Stark, high- and low-frequency mangled synthetics meet glassy, delicate organics and suggest a conflict between two very different forces. Alternating between tense, tinkly beds and ugly, unnatural sharp metallics, this cut could work for dystopian futures, cybercrimes, Science Fiction, space or watching something beautiful get defiled.
  • VHMD000703 1:53
Panoramic, attention-getting conflict. Two massive distorted horn/drum hits set the stage for an epic scale production. Filled with multiple swells and builds that result in explosive drum hits, this cut increases in intensity and tenor until :58, when it takes a brief pause for a high, shimmering feedback/hearing loss section. Returns to the large-scale drama with a gargantuan rise starting @1:08 and builds intensely until the final hit @1:34. Widely useful for dystopias, Science Fiction, thrillers, space, ancient battles - anytime you need to establish that the stakes are huge.
  • VHMD000704 1:41
Promoting a Hitchcock marathon? The most unnecessarily-specific birds-related MODULE ever made. A disturbing and trippy evocation of a most unwelcoming environment, this track features the screams, calls and cries of over 200 species of birds - manipulated and intensified. Varies throughout between evil darkness, shocking intensity and spare mystery with pulsing low heartbeat-like swells @:45. Good for suggesting environmental dangers, being hunted, making statues nervous and taking your Twitter ("tweeting") responsibilities too literally.
  • VHMD000705 0:54
You just lost your hearing and your fighter jet. Starting with a painful metallic feedback jolt to the head, some fucked up voices and weird electrostatic bed, this cut suggests someplace uncertain, but unpleasant. Glitchy hits and bit-dithered rhythms @:38 blast you into alertness, aware that your death is seconds away. But so, most likely, is a Starbucks. Abstract and disturbing, this one's good for communications screw-ups, terrorism, torture or horror.
  • VHMD000706 1:40
Tension, suspense and violence in multiple varieties. From the metallic, alarm-like open to the piano-wire stress, engine-like rises and abrupt changes of perspective and mood, this cut begins with a tense rise @:25 climaxing into a bed of trippy, clock-like movement and atmospheric, smoke-like pads. Good for stalking, thrillers, investigations or having your home invaded by thieves (as opposed to the Visigoths).
  • VHMD000707 0:44
A jail breaks out of itself. A series of multi-layered rises-to-hits , featuring metallics, chains, door rattles, combined with low-frequency, earth-moving concrete rumbles, and stone friction. Rise from @:22 to :31 means something nasty is heading our way.
  • VHMD000708 0:53
Stabbing, shock-ridden, artificial hit-filled tension that brings to mind quick images of murder. Overdriven hits and deliberately distorted instruments swirl together to create a sinister maelstrom of conflict, corrupted dreams and aggressive actions. Good for sadism, shadowy supernatural (vampires/zombies/monsters), violence, horror and evil tension.
  • VHMD000709 0:55
Sophisticated suspense, with more than a little psychosis. Starts atmospheric and metallic, using sounds primarily generated from a Slinky and a toddler's toy instruments. Wavering, bell-like sounds from :18 on paint an unstable mental picture, building unsteadily to a violent, nasty-ass hit @:44. Works for stalkers, murder, violence or abductions.
  • VHMD000710 1:03
Betrayal and violence on a knife edge. Sharp, slicing metal sounds interrupted by gun shot hits suggest that someone's going on the really, really naughty list this year. More musical than most MODULES, with a drum-driven rise starting @:14 and other percussive builds to payoffs, the most pounding one ending @:48.
  • VHMD000711 0:36
Going from human to animal and - maybe - back. Tense, hair-standing-on-edge sounds yield to fleshy, under-your-skin bubbling, ripping organics, low thrumming swells, punctuated by breathy exclamations. Great for scary physical transformations of any kind, torture, terrorism, scenes of inexplicable horror or eating your own delicious offspring.
  • VHMD000712 1:36
Atlas casts off his shackles. Enormous metal chains are being dragged and swung around with violent, forceful impacts. Between the huge hits that litter the piece are airy atmospheres and shimmering, layered rises punctuated by metallic sparkles. Perfect for prison scenes, tense reveals, supervillains, dungeons, or escaping the metaphorical confines of artistic expression by beating them with a metal pipe.
  • VHMD000713 1:02
Opening, then breaking, Pandora's Box. Hammering drum-driven rhythms are juxtaposed between lush, floating strings and textures, varying the mood between tense anticipation and beauty/wonder. Problems arise with a series of fast hits @:21 and a darkening, foreboding mood that gathers. @:29 a percussive, ticking rise slowly grows into chaos. Good for demonstrating the overreach of man (especially in Sci-Fi settings), the human condition or simply that man just can't control everything no matter how much he loves you, Ursula.
  • VHMD000714 0:38
Trees come to life and go on a murderous rampage. Could totally happen - I saw "Poltergeist." A wide variety of threatening sounds derived from wood, leaves, branches, etc, creates an organically sinister environment of fear, suspense and destruction, punctuated by unnatural, distorted hits. Creaking, crushing and crunching noises can also be transposed to other non-literal applications like investigations, stalking, abduction, horror - even monsters. Enjoy your next walk in the woods, Thoreau.
  • VHMD000715 0:52
Waterboarding meets electroshock in an undisclosed bunker. Muffled, constricted water sounds yield to breathy gasps. Since this yobbo is still not talking, they break out the electrodes @:15 and you can just tell exactly where the clamp is going. Something absolutely horrific is happening @:38 and :41 - I can't even look at my speakers - then the lights flicker and slowly come back to life. Unlike our victim. Good for horror, torture, murder, violence and making yogurt-ginseng-puppy smoothies.
  • VHMD000746 0:46
Electricity noises sizzle and buzz, creating a stream of electrical current - or really loud ground hum. Good for suggesting something is supercharged, going to explode or definitely not Amish.
  • VHMD000751 0:48
The growth and evolution of a new shiny future. Fast synth arpeggios, shimmering pads, gleaming textures and dramatic choir/brass build intensely to an epic, positive payoff. Good for instilling a sense of expectant awe or wonder.
  • VHMD000752 0:46
Dramatic rise with low brass pads, futuristic metallic/bells and shimmering glassy suspensions slowly transitions from light tension to positive resolution. Great for overcoming technological hurdles or suggesting scientific progress.
  • VHMD000753 0:36
This pulsing, gleaming modern synthetic/airy accelerating rise creates an edge-of-your-set sense of anticipation, excitement and positive tension. Perfect for contests, reality shows or other big events.
