  • VHSH000401 2:28
[Reflective Tension >> Driving Action] Ever-building widescreen opener. Begins small with very subtle pulses and strings overlaid with a single emotive nylon guitar and, @:20, a flute. A hit @:40 announces conflict initiation with string and percussion strikes that set the stage for a later confrontation, The track then steadily ratchets up the tension all the way to a forceful hit @1:54, which leads into a questioning segment and one final hit. Good for global espionage, showing the inevitability of political events and the human side of world domination.
  • VHSH000402 2:21
[Driving Percussion >> Intense Action] Waves of mounting percussive adrenaline. Wave #1: a series of thwacks sets the stage for a good smacking, kicking in @:13 with layers of Arabian and electronic percussion. Another series of orchestral transitions sets up the next level of action, in @:29, with more traditional orchestral "thriller" elements building suspense up to a big percussion breakdown @:52. Wave #2: another crescendo of active percussion and orchestral movement until @1:30 we get a mysterious reprieve. Wave #3: begins @1:40 its short, but steep, ascent to a final crest @:2:09.
  • VHSH000403 2:18
[Building Suspense >> Action] Music for the perfect escape. Begins with a sense of concealed purpose provided by spare ticking and enigmatic melodies, joined by beats and low strings @:32 as the game begins. An anxious buildup leads to discovery and the chase is on @:58. Tense strings and edgy dumbeks engage us in a game of cat-and-mouse until 1:20, when successful evasion seems to occur. We have a few moments of false security until 1:47, when the chase renews even more urgently as the tempo and pace increase frenetically to the final hit @2:10. The beginning section is good for any clandestine activities with a technological bent, and the latter ones for breakouts and international pursuits.
  • VHSH000404 2:18
[Inquisitive Sophistication >> Arid Mystery >> Layered Tension] Targets converge on London and Dubai. This cut sets the stage for a risky exposure as sophisticated European strings and understated beats determinedly portray an agent's infiltration with a sense of purpose. Things go horribly awry from :54 to 1:00 with intense trills, washes and percussion audibly widening our eyes. Then a hard cut to the confusing desert heat as an Arabian flute and more subtle electronics set the stage for a different, deadlier, kind of mystery. Driving percussion, in @1:24, begins the intertwining of the two music ideas, which build together to a climax @2:09.
  • VHSH000405 2:33
[Introspective / Sad] A man looks at a picture of a dead family, mourns soulfully, vows revenge and wanders out of frame. From the beginning, a plaintive oboe establishes the mood of sadness and sense of loss. @:42 the main theme is echoed by the guitar, while @1:18 the piece turns more hopeful and determined with swelling strings signaling an eventual call to action. Good for stories of grieving, melancholic reflection, or tragic moments followed by a bit of hope.
  • VHSH000406 2:13
[Determined / Conclusively Heroic] The positive conclusion. Big horns and drums announce that the good guys have won. A brief mournful section from :11 to :46 acknowledges the human costs incurred, but the triumphant return of the french horns and strings means we've already forgotten the dead by :59. A big whoosh leads to a positive rendition of the main theme that grows ever more celebratory until the final payoff. Good for tales of heroism, joyful world events and homecomings.
  • VHSH000407 3:13
[Driving / Aggressive Dark Action] Manic, fast-paced brutality. Begins with jagged interlocking guitars, frantic percussion and atmospheric breaks all decorated with oblique sound design. Precise rhythmic delays and edits make this cut (& the whole score) feel like someone has sped up time. @1:41 a sparse break creates a moment to catch your breath with dark, reverbed, trombone washes, followed by a creepy bass break @2:14 setting up the return of the full mix @2:21. Good for chases, Gothic/futuristic action or anything fast and violent.
  • VHSH000408 1:54
[Ticking >> Dark / Explosive Suspense] Opens with delayed electric guitar "ticking" against atmospheric synths, e-bowed guitars and trombone. @:39 an explosion stops the tick and introduces a dark, tense feel with processed, backwards elements. @:58 the explosions begin to come more frequently, slowly bringing the ticking back as the whole sonic spectrum seems to literally rip apart. Good for hallucinations, nightmares, and suggesting fear or paranoia.
  • VHSH000409 2:34
[Atmospheric >> Neutral / Positive Bed] Driving, purposeful bed with a moody introduction. Starts atmospheric with washy processed Rhodes, reverbed trombone swells and furtive delayed electric guitar figures. @:50 a mid-tempo, spare guitar bed begins, slowly building in pitch to 1:29 where a four-on-the-floor electronic kick drives the rhythmic muted electric guitar and electric bass, while e-bowed electric guitar and trombone create a positive, almost optimistic melody above the driving undercurrent of activity. Good for news, sports and anytime you feel like sneaking some Prog Rock into your work.
  • VHSH000410 1:56
[Violent Vignettes >> Tense Pounding] Imagine someone showing you a series of crime scene photos, each one worse than the next. The first half of this cut is a series of short, violent percussive vignettes, each describing a different photo, each with its own sonic personality and length, separated by a hit/crash. By 1:13 the pounding becomes almost regular and begins building in intensity and fullness until the final hit @1:42. Featuring only percussion (metal, drums, found objects), electric guitar, and trombone ambiences, this cut works for chases, shocking moments and nightmarish, cut-heavy scenes.
  • VHSH000411 1:11
[Ticking with Nightmarish Events] A time-based cut with simple percussion providing a clock-like ticking. Jolting/upsetting metallic "alarms" littered throughout @:21, :42 and 1:04 create disruptive breaks. With each successive alarm, the ticking sections change: the first ticking section is neutral, with dry muted guitars; the second section (starting @:27) is more threatening with growing swells of evil-sounding trombone and washy strings; the third ticking section (starting @:45) is more positive and musical with Chapman stick and guitar.
  • VHSH000412 1:44
[Nightmarish Sound Design with Multiple Explosive Climaxes] Need a creepy image punctuated by an explosion? Look no further. This cut, designed for easy editing, is a tool kit of atmospheric/nightmarish interludes, each culminating in a variety of explosive/percussive events that will probably fit any need you may have for disturbing sound design. Personal favorite: the tranquil, gentle pad @1:11 that grows into a horrible, explosive mess by 1:32.
  • VHSH000413 1:53
[Spare Noir >> Slow Gritty Drama] Starting with e-bowed guitar, Rhodes pads and delayed electric bass, this slow-tempoed cut builds languidly to a hit @:49 where a simple trap drum beat creates the feeling that some interpersonal drama is brewing. A mellow trombone melody enters @1:07, joined by e-bowed electric guitar @1:22 introducing an almost positive/hopeful vibe. This cut works for gritty footage or slow dissolve images of bad neighborhoods.
  • VHSH000414 1:20
[Suspenseful Bed >> Driving / Angry Explode-A-Thon] A look at rage from the inside. Mid-tempo, dry, muted guitars and rhythmic toms create a neutral bed above dissonant trombone washes, but as the cut progresses the character of the electric guitar changes, slowly becoming more distorted and aggressive-sounding, as does the nature of the toms hits, which not only get more frequent, but also grow in size and character. By :44 the cut is full-on aggressive, with huge tom hits and sinister trombone notes climbing in tenor and pitch. Good for building tension and suspense.
  • VHSH000415 2:09
[Positive / Optimistic] The happy ending. Processed electric guitars create a bed of movement with electric bass and simple ticking percussion. Subtle trombone washes enter @:43. A fake-out break @:59 creates a small pause - but a fuller mix featuring a positive, life-affirming, e-bowed electric guitar/trombone melody and more driving acoustic drums begins @1:12 and climaxes @1:44. An extra, loopable drums-only section is included @1:50 for those who need another variety of bed. Good for positive news or stories of hope and redemption.
  • VHSH000416 2:07
[Varying Degrees of Light, Positive Movement] Good expository framework. Positive/neutral bed of mid-tempo movement provided by acoustic guitar, mandolin, shaker and gentle piano melody. Shifts throughout in mix and instrumentation, but remains straightforward in its emotional direction. Starts small then progressively builds starting @:20, often citing the main theme.
  • VHSH000417 1:42
[Slightly Sad / Dark / Introspective Movement] Minor-key delayed piano and reversed/delayed electric guitar create a more intimate bed of darker, indecisive feelings. Occasional pizzicato strings (@:32, :52 and 1:22 most notably) add a feeling that time is passing. @:52 a brief build from pizzicato strings to an emotional strings/synth swell briefly stops the almost constant clock-like pulsing of the cut - then returns to the pulsing @1:07. Ends with a surprisingly happy last note @1:37. This cut suggests personal conflict and difficult decisions.
  • VHSH000418 1:34
[Sad / Bittersweet Introspection >> Positive-ish Resolution] Like we need to explain to you what a cut called "Broken Heart" sounds like. Slow tempo, gentle reverbed piano over a bed of strings. You can't create a more heart-tugging or touching listening experience than that, unless you decide to add a cello section. @:27 we add a cello section, which provides gently building swells until a resolution that begins @1:08 suggests that everything will be okay. Combine this cut with a photo montage, or old Super 8 footage of previously owned pets, and they'll be crying in no time.
  • VHSH000419 2:14
[Positive / Optimistic / Playful] Ah, Springtime. Impossibly happy variations on the main theme suggesting images of people living happily together, flowers growing and the promise of new chances. Starting with a "time passing" vibe with pizzicato strings, woodwinds and mandolin, the cut builds into a climactic iteration of the main theme (@:26 adding piano.) The rest of the cut revisits the theme, with different instrumental combinations and different interludes, like the busy castanet/pizzicato break @:42 or the ultra-light, "falling" motif that starts @1:12. Good for suggesting carefree activity or rebirth.
  • VHSH000420 1:24
[Warm / Sad Reflection / Hope] Halting, reverbed piano figures and processed electric guitar atop a shifting bed of suspended string/wind pads create a sense of reflection and reminiscence. A low final string note @1:08 suggests resolution. Great for intimating sad nostalgia, loneliness or even hope, for all you optimists. Perfect for soft-focus montages or title/closing credit sequences.
  • VHSH000421 2:22
[Positive Industriousness >> Proud >> Positive Resolution] Uplifting cut that is divided into three parts. The first part suggests people working together, creating a positive, pulsing figure that builds from an acoustic guitar, piano, processed electric guitar and string pads to eventually include a full orchestra by 1:04. A cymbal swell introduces the second part @1:35, with proud strings and a climbing bassline creating a sense of pride and achievement. A fake-out build to 1:52 reintroduces the theme from the first part, though this time slightly more subdued - but still happy.
  • VHSH000422 2:12
[Neutral / Newsy >> Positive / Proud >> Neutral, Light Movement] A less outwardly-positive version of the main theme, with constant movement suggesting the passage of time or activity. Acoustic guitar, strings and processed electric guitar again provide a backdrop for a "falling" piano figure (starting @:31) that builds to a piano-driven emotional climactic theme that starts @:48. @1:07 we return to the neutral movement, but this time with touches of positivity from piano/string lines. Good for positive news and documentaries.
  • VHSH000423 2:08
[Positive Action / Fun / Comedy] Uptempo orchestral activity with touches of comedic/slapstick climaxes. One of the most "straight" orchestral pieces in the score, this cut's frenetic, unrelenting pace suggests madcap activity broken by moments of positive clarity and hopefulness (@1:16), only to slowly degenerate back to comedic chaos (@1:38). Good for cartoonish action, or just suggesting chaos and disorder.
  • VHSH000424 2:00
[Positive / Bouncy / Fun] A walk through a busy office. Lighthearted uptempo electronic drum loops, delayed analog ostinato synths and pizzicato strings create an upbeat bed that progressively builds with bassoon, piano brass and strings. The main melodic theme enters @:27 and is annoyingly springy. A climactic build starting @1:49 suggests tension, but stops short with a fake-out ending @1:54.
  • VHSH000425 2:14
[Light Comedic Tension >> Positive] The sound of a greased cat burglar on ice. Slower tempoed electronic drums, piano, pizzicato strings, synth pads, frog-like vocal samples, tambourine and timpani start this piece suggesting a very, very unstealthy cat burglar who @1:00 actually musically starts tiptoeing around (suggested by trilling piano, jaw harp, pizzicato strings and a tempo increase). The main theme returns @1:13, but now more positive and less hesitant with added choir samples and glockenspiel. Good for hinting at clumsiness and the least sneakiest person ever.
  • VHSH000426 2:07
[Building Comedic Tension >> Carnival-like Frenzy] A midnight break-in that goes wrong and gets worse. Starting slow and measured with delayed synths, tremelando strings and electronic percussion, the cut builds to a spy-like, calm, solo piano/synth statement of the theme @:28 - which grows into Elfman-like chaos by :48 with plodding tubas and frenetic strings. Climbing strings climax @1:15 and return the cut to an uptempo, playful and off-kilter rendition of the main theme. The chaos returns @1:56 for a chaotic build to the climax @2:02. Cartoony, circus-like cut that suggests the constant flip-flopping from control to utter chaos.
  • VHSH000427 2:25
[Building Comedic Tension >> Comedic Gothic Horror] Cartoon scary. Starting with bells, tremelando high strings, plodding low strings, xylophone, bongos/congas, piano (in @:33) and a mid-tempo drum loop that continues throughout, the cut slowly adds more "threatening" elements, like gothic choir samples (in @:50). Good for kids' Halloween stuff and implying that something that should be scary isn't.
  • VHSH000428 1:29
[Comedic Sneaking Music] Stereotypical cheesy/cartoony "tiptoeing" music that suggests someone's trying to be sneaky - and failing. Starting with spare percussion and pizzicato strings, the theme is restated in progressively fuller mix variations (except a brief weird synth and pizzicato string version starting @:47).
  • VHSH000429 2:22
[Light Comedic Tension >> Tension] Silly sneaking music that builds into much scarier suspense. Low strings and piano start the cut with a "Jaws"-like figure, while pizzicato high strings play the main theme - all over a bed of electronic drums. The mix builds in intensity until :36 when the cut breaks for an organ/electronic drum bed featuring tremelando strings carrying the melody. @1:08 a more circus-like and cartoonish variation features an organ rhythm with a solo tuba melody. @1:24 the cut gets slightly more serious with a spare piano carrying the theme - until 1:39, when the mood turns dark and serious as the full orchestra builds to a tense climax @2:08. A softer, alternate ending follows (featuring vibes and harp), for those who can't hack the heat.
  • VHSH000430 1:54
[Dignified / Sad featuring Woman's Vocals] The promise of a sunrise. Slow, delicate open that starts with shakuhachi, solo violin piano and string pads - building in emotional tenor and fullness as more orchestral instruments enter (fullest by :55). @:44 a woman's vocal completes the feeling that this proud, beautiful melody is subtly tinged with sadness. Features two endings: a softer, sadder one starting @1:38 or a darker, more percussive climax @1:48. Good for reminiscing about happier times and suggesting emotional warmth.
  • VHSH000431 2:23
[Positive / Hope >> Epic Pageantry / Majesty] Slow, simple theme that builds into one whopper of epic orchestral bluster. From the guzheng glissando that opens the cut, a lone hand drum and erhu begin the piece, progressively adding a woman's vocals, orchestral strings, and solo violin to create a theme that grows in positivity and pride. The cut builds ever greater starting from @1:20 until 1:34, when the entire orchestra (and their relatives, it sounds like) comes in with an unabashedly huge sounding moment that still gives me goosebumps. Great for showing progress or just knocking people out of their chairs.
  • VHSH000432 2:54
[Atmospheric Mystery] Portrays the dark mystery of empty streets. Slow, atmospheric synthesizer pads with processed erhu, gamelan, solo violin and wooden percussion. @:48 steady, measured gamelan hits and guzheng create the sensation of time passing as the cut starts to grow in complexity, getting biggest @1:37 and then slowly receding for the remainder of the cue. The ephemeral, constantly shifting feel of this cut suggests mysticism and intrigue, while the melody suggests tranquility and comfort - good for reminiscences, the compressed passage of time or shots of nature's serenity.
  • VHSH000433 2:00
[Industriousness with Menacing Overtones] Three levels/varieties of orchestral tension. A camera literally "flies" through the streets of 1939 Japan and into the busy markets and active plazas, suggesting light tension & bustle with growing marcato strings, pulsing timpani, glockenspiel, and brass/winds - all building in tenor. There's a climax @1:06, when the camera enters a busy factory and the music reflects this industriousness with soaring strings and brass, suggesting pride and positive energy. But the mood suddenly changes as a chime gliss @1:36 brings us to a, dissonant, plodding, brass-heavy sinister feel as the camera reveals what the workers are making: a harbor full of warships.
  • VHSH000434 3:00
[Serene Movement >> Dignified Pride >> Serene Movement] Relaxing, flowing, piano-like synths and hand drums create a neutral undercurrent for solo violin. Builds to a positive/inspirational full mix @:55 that incorporates the main theme with orchestral/synth strings. @1:44 the mix slowly dissolves back to the simple synth comps and solo violin. The serene ending is great for suggesting nature and also works as a neutral pad for news with positive outcomes. The center, more positive section is good for reunions and emotional climaxes.
  • VHSH000435 2:07
[Action / Driving Tension] A musical interpretation of exploding bombs and blazing gunfire. Active, relentless flurry of strings, hi hats and large percussion that starts small and just keeps getting bigger and more tense. The cut adds brass and larger percussion @:15 and builds to a climax @:45 with a gothic choir break. @:52 the tense activity begins again but reaches a dramatic, decisive explosion of conflict @1:45 with proud brass and angry flute/piccolo players. Good for conflict, letting people know something terrible is coming or scenes with really fast edits.
  • VHSH000436 1:46
[Drum Tension Building in Size, Tempo and Intensity] For those of you who don't know what a taiko is, it's a huge (usually larger than a barrel - sometimes the size of a small car) Japanese drum beaten with large wooden sticks. This cut begins with one taiko starting a slow, simple beat - adding another @:11, and another @:17, and so on - until you have a large battery of these huge drums creating a thundering wall of sound by 1:16. Of course, the rhythm is getting faster and more intense until the huge final hit @1:36. Majestic, dynamic and awe-inspiring (especially for those of you with sub woofers), this cut is great for suggesting coming disaster or conflict.
  • VHSH000437 1:12
[Somber Aftermath / Sad] A camera pans across a burned-out battlefield, capturing the destruction on grainy black and white film. Acoustic guitar and synth comps create a subtle raindrop-like rhythm above sober and reflective string pads. Simple and elegiac, this cut is appropriate for memorials, heart-wrenching sadness and loss.
